2010 Lancia Stratos Concept Review

Legendary Lancia Stratos HF was without doubt the most impressive and successful rally car 70 century. Its exciting lines and uncompromising design tailor-made for racing, Lancia Stratos, but only has rewritten the history of the rally, has won a permanent place in the hearts of countless fans of the dramatic spectacle of the world of asphalt and gravel roads - which provides for the execution of three consecutive World Championship titles.

Michael Stoschek, collector, and the driver of historic racing cars, as well as a successful entrepreneur in the automotive sector, the development and construction of a modern version of the Lancia Stratos is the culmination of a long dream. Already in 2003, the dream had already begun to take concrete, is now finally become a reality.

In November 2010, forty years after the introduction of Stratos in the Turin Motor Show, New Stratos was presented publicly for the first time at the Circuit Paul Ricard - legend returns.

A retrospective.

It all started in 1970, the stand of Turin is a car designer Bertone. Extreme Stratos study shows there - a masterpiece of stylish designer Marcello Gandini - not only to excite the visitors, but, Cesare Fiorio, Lancia team manager ... and refused to let go.

Just one year later, the Lancia Stratos has reached its definitive form when midmounted Lancia Fulvia V4 engine has been replaced by a more powerful engine Ferrari Dino V6. The road version of "pussy" was only 1.08 meters in height, mounted on a steel frame is short, and his body has been shaped by sophisticated aerodynamic fiberglass reinforced. Lancia Stratos "light weight, ideal weight distribution and excellent dynamics, provided ideal conditions for great performance in the International Rally of songs, which at that time were still dominated by the Alpine and Porsche. However, the results were not as immediately gratifying .

Only works when the driver Sandro Munari Lancia and the British Formula 1 driver Mike Parkes was driving behind the wheel of a car ruthless success is achieved. And he did it at the speed of light in 1973 by Sandro Munari won the first victory of the Lancia Stratos HF, and profits continue to arrive throughout 1974. By the end of 1976, the Lancia Stratos pulled off a hat trick, winning three World Championships in a row.

The Italian 'Flying Wedge' has also been successful beyond their deployment works: top driver brought an incredible Bernard Darniche 41 wins in his Lancia Stratos - most of them with the private team, Chardonnet France.

Dramatic reduction of Fiat Lancia racing budget in 1979 to Fiat 131 Abarth was the death knell for Stratos works team. From there was only dedicated customer teams competing on the field against the factory cars - which in 1981 Monte Carlo Rally.

Even today, there is little other vehicle, which is to inspire audiences around the world motorsport, such as the Lancia Stratos. Maximilian and Michael Stoschek also share this enthusiasm for years - not as spectators but as active sports car enthusiasts - and they have done to create a modern interpretation of this legendary car of their objectives.

Projects designers.

The Stratos is a new modern non-commercial project by Michael and his son Maximilian Stoschek Stoschek. Together they played a decisive role in determining the technical concept and design of the unique vehicle. The construction of the car has been ongoing since the fall of 2008 at Pininfarina in Turin, Italy.

Michael Stoschek is Chairman of the Brose Group. Brose is the fifth largest family-owned company between the automotive suppliers worldwide.

As an athlete, Stoschek won the Carrera Panamericana in 1999, 2001 and 2004 Championship and the FIA ??European Rally 2006, driving a Porsche 911 in 1971 in both races. The Lancia Stratos Group 4 has a special place among the historic rally cars Stoschek used for meetings and hillclimbing. With a design of Marlboro, the vehicle has been restored to more than a decade, according to the specifications of the 1974 Tour de Corse Andruet / Biche car works.

The decision to develop and build a new ready-to-run Stratos was interested in meeting with Chris Hrabalek, with whom he visited in 1986 Michael Stoschek Stratos global meeting held in Alta Badia is Stoschek. This was also the impetus behind the Stoschek Fenomenon Stratos participation in the project, presented at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, as well as with its acquisition of trademark rights Stratos.

In September 2008, Michael and his son, Maximilian Stoschek commissioned Pininfarina to build one-off vehicle. At the moment, the new Stratos is one of a kind. Maximilian and Michael Stoschek to maintain all rights of ownership of the vehicle and tools. Production of exclusive, limited-access pass to their plans.

The design as a challenge.

Products remain forever in the classic style icons. Bertone, Lancia Stratos, the vanguard of design, has a unique now than before. A modern interpretation of classic styles represents a special challenge for the designer. It can be difficult to find the right balance problems, on the other hand, much of the original design and on the other hand, leaving too much of the original concept.

The body design of the Stratos New 'and the interior was designed in close consultation with customers, Hrabalek Chris and his staff, as well as renowned automobile designers like Pininfarina Luca Borgogno.

Stoschek said, "because the design of the Lancia Stratos is characterized by the contrast between the round entirety and directly, I wanted to see that power is included in the new Stratos too."

The mission was to find a contemporary interpretation of all the design features of the Lancia Stratos quintessence, as the distinctive wedge-shaped body, semi-circular windshield, radiator with its striking central front, rear tail lights with round the roof and rear spoiler and five-star rims.

After the design direction has been identified, a number of measures were necessary to make a new Stratos fully operational, the sports car road ready. This comprehensive and complex process includes not only the production of a prototype, but the car's overall development through mathematical modeling, design implementation and verification of each individual component of the wind tunnel test.

Stratos new phase in the development of the whole design proceeded with tests in the Pininfarina wind tunnel - First of all, to ensure that the basic shape of the machine, then the last phase of testing to determine the aerodynamic details.

Among other things, the body was set on a different level and height fields, and the effect of these is the perfect balance between surface pressure on the front and rear, was measured in the wind tunnel for "treadmill" at a speed between 140 and 200 km / h. The impact of different front, roof and rear spoiler in advance and rear downforce extensively studied and led to the current model. In addition, a different spoiler tested the platform to increase downforce on the front axle. Efficiency of air intakes and outlets, motor cooling system and brakes have been optimized for flow visualization techniques and pressure.

New Engineering Stratos.

The target for the development of the successor to the Lancia Stratos HF was the creation of a new mid-engine sports car with a short wheelbase, low weight and greater agility.

As the Lancia Stratos, with its V6 Dino Ferrari was nevertheless clear a sports car in its own right, the New Stratos is a significant development, with components of the Scuderia Ferrari 430. Almost all of these items have been changed and, if necessary, adapted to their new target. However, he also stressed that the Scuderia Ferrari already set the standard among the current super sports cars and as such provides an excellent basis for further development offers.

Aluminum frame has been reduced from 20 cm roll-bar and welded steel 40 mm thick fe45 FIA. This method significantly increases the rigidity, and this, combined with the transition towards the center of gravity in front of the vehicle provides the basis for outstanding handling characteristics. Just as the body - which is 33 centimeters shorter than the Scuderia - and the interior is constructed entirely of carbon fiber and aluminum. All parts of the body and the interior is made of carbon visible. This raises a question of particularly high quality treatment, which was conducted re-Fraschini.

The centerpiece of the new 4.3L Stratos, light alloy V8 engine of the Ferrari F430, which accelerates the sports car high-tech at a speed of 200 km / h in 9.7 seconds. The high performance engine that draws its intake air side opening roof spoiler were fitted with a control unit and a new high-performance exhaust system by Capristo, including collector and sport exhaust system cat and it delivers 540 hp and torque of 500 Nm

The sequential 6-speed differential Drexler received a new mechanical and electronic control change now allows for extremely fast gear changes.

The chassis has been completely redesigned by the engineers at ZF Sachs, including the integration of newly developed electronic calibration, adjustable steering wheel, revised springs and optimized values ??camber and toe. 9 and 11-inches wide by 19-inch wheels central locking fitted with Dunlop Sport Maxx tires, size 265/30/19 315/30/19 and.

Fully benefit from the lightness, torsional stiffness, well balanced vehicle, the height, camber, caster and convergence was completely changed, and, above all, the whole setup.

To this end, the springs stiffer suspension calibration used with new shock with a greater differentiation of stiffness damper, adjustable via the steering wheel and the optimum wheel / tire combination is identified by testing different tire brands, sizes and materials rubber composites.

Brose-backed, Portuguese Touring Car Championship and former Formula 1 driver, Tiago Monteiro, helped develop the platform in close collaboration with engineers, ZF Sachs.

Brembo brake systems, consisting of discs of 398mm diameter ceramic and 6-piston front and 350 mm in diameter and 4-piston calipers rear axle bearings is equipped with Brembo brakes and Racing flexible steel lines.

Finally, management has become electro-hydraulic, the new carbon wheel shows the exact turning points with LEDs of different colors and palettes are the Ferrari 430 runs.

The battery is a unit of lithium-carbon in a house with a weight of 4.2 kg and a capacity of 84 Ah.

The redesigned interior is made of a new instrument panel with new instruments, new door panels and new racing seats. All components are made of carbon fiber - including new finishing panels. The air conditioning in the new cockpit was built by Ferrari. Lining of the doors are designed to keep driver and passenger helmets, like the Lancia Stratos. All external parts and internal carbon fiber was treated with a clear varnish mixed with 2 percent of black content, making the structure of carbon is only visible close up.

Unlike the side windows of the Lancia Stratos, the tilt mechanism gives partial lowering, New Stratos was equipped with a specially designed window regulator Brose with anti-pinch system. By separating the window adjustment mechanism from its engine is a complete lowering of the windows as possible, despite the space helmet built into the doors. In addition, variable door stops, seat adjustment and locking systems for hoods and side doors designed and manufactured by Brose. Here are not based on accuracy, but also to reduce the weight, was of crucial importance. The new window system is only allowed for a reduction of 5.5 kg compared to F430.

Despite the steel bar of about 55kg and 28kg roll of air conditioning - it was necessary to take due to the large windows - New Stratos weighs about 80 kg less than the base vehicle. Not only is it an excellent performance, but also the pleasure of driving incredible New Stratos deliveries are a direct result of the dry weight of just 1247kg, good balance and a new installation.

The last test.

This test was taken in planning for very little: November 18, the Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, and its chief test driver, Dario Benuzzi, took the new Stratos Maranello Fiorano circuit for the first time.

A couple of laps, it was obvious that Luca di Montezemolo has been very impressed with the accuracy of vehicle management. Several enthusiastic exclamations, and "beautiful!" and "congratulations!" were heard, while the car was released.

Sincerity of praise is further underlined in di Montezemolo made a phone call to his technical director Roberto Fedeli, and requested his presence on the track, so he too could have a closer look at New Stratos. Fedeli made a thorough inspection of the vehicle with another technical advisor. When he finished, he was also full of praise - not only great engineering, but many details and labor had won more than Ferrari's technical director

Meanwhile, Darius Benuzzi got behind the wheel and sped down the racing line, maneuvering curbs and chicanes, and the circuit of Ferrari. He too was impressed with the New Stratos' driving accuracy and a very rigid, and thanks to his 40 years of experience in sports and auto calibration racing, the Ferrari legend was also an opportunity to give some advice on how to remove shaking a little 'rear end, which occurred when the curve at high speed. This is the result of the rear wheels toe-in a little 'more before the presentation of the Paul Ricard circuit.

Now the afterglow of this very positive feedback from Ferrari to the top, highly motivated team New Stratos begins preparation for presentation at Le Castellet.

Presentation.

From the first fuzzy images of New Stratos appeared on the internet in the summer of 2010, sports car enthusiasts and motorsports fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting confirmation of whether the successor of the legendary Lancia Stratos really drive as impressive agility and fast so by the mold.

On 29 November 30 and it was time for Michael and Maximilian Stoschek invited a select group of journalists, designers, engineers, race and rally drivers in the world premiere in Le Castellet, so they can finally the experience of the new Stratos live and in action. In addition, participants were able to do not only racing seat on the passenger side, but behind the wheel sport with Manettino small output. After some initial discussions racing style of the WTCC driver Tiago Monteiro and Maximilian and Michael was Stoschek new novices Stratos has personally catapult the car 540 hp on the intermediate circuit 6-speed sequential.

As expected, no one spends this time at least, all Darniche Bernard, champion of French and European rallies many times, and - with 41 wins - the most successful driver for Lancia Stratos of all time. Accelerated the successor of his victory over the legendary car of the narrow section, twisty circuit Paul Ricard, like the good old days. In an interview after Darniche left no doubt about his enthusiasm for managing the application of shaving and gradual, even the smallest orders steering, brake and gas. Moreover, the exceptional quality of workmanship for one vehicle and the level of perfection in every detail, unanimously impressed the members of the press tour.

During dinner, then the theory of practice, which had stopped designers, technicians suspension, development engineers, project managers and, of course, the initiators themselves, leaving no unanswered Stratos new development in their fun classes and individual interviews. No questions, that is, except the possibility of a limited number. However, if there is sufficient demand, this problem may soon have an answer too.

Performance.

The new Stratos, as a racing version of its predecessor, is largely aimed - in every detail - for a lightweight structure and performance. This is not surprising that the product was a very ambitious in this sense as well.

Lower vehicle weight, excellent balance and precision chassis components made possible by the rigid body, it is intended not only to provide an exciting driving experience, but to get measurable results in the form of objective data.

Since work on the new Stratos continues almost without interruption until the presentation at Le Castellet, and time has not offered the opportunity to test the performance, must be made as soon as possible.

We expect power to weight ratio less than 2.3 kg / hp with an acceleration time from 0-100 km / h in 3.3 seconds and 0-200 km / h in 9.7 seconds. We expect full marks for braking performance and a reference position in the 18 - and 36-meter slalom and handling similar tests.

After the introduction of the new rear axle ratio (crown and pinion 9 / 45), the maximum speed will be reduced to 274 km / h, to achieve better acceleration values.
